What you need to organise before your Route 66 tour

September 18, 2017Travel

From the moment you book an overseas holiday, the countdown to your departure starts. You might stare at the calendar at work as the months and weeks turn into days – waiting to board that flight to the United States.

However, you can productively use this time to prepare for your Route 66 adventure. In this article, we'll outline all the small tasks that you'll need to complete for a stress-free and fun time away from home!

Passports and visas

With the United States recently tightening its borders, it's now more important than ever to have the correct documentation with you on arrival.

As well as ensuring that all airline tickets, bookings and passports are in the same name, you must hold an E-passport with at least 6 months' validity from your return date of travel.

On an Australian passport, you can get a Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) online which means you won't need a visa for less than 90 days of travel. If you're travelling on another passport, please refer to the relevant visa criteria.

You must hold an E-passport with at least 6 months' validity from your return date of travel.

Travel Insurance

All passengers on our tours must have a comprehensive level of travel insurance prior to departure. While we recommend Suresave Travel Insurance, you're free to choose a provider of your choice.

Under the conditions of your trip, your travel insurance policy must include coverage for both vehicle excess and a cancellation fee.

Get to know your fellow solo travellers

One of the great advantages of travelling with Route 66 Tours is that we can pair up solo passengers who want to share accommodation. If there is another person on your trip who wants to twin share accommodation and/or car hire, we can put you in touch via email prior to departure.

This way, you can start to get to know your new travel friend and feel more comfortable when the tour commences.

Plan your pre/post tour travel

If you don't get a lot of time off work for travel, why not take the opportunity to see a little more of the United States before or after your Route 66 adventure? Perhaps you want to see the bright lights of New York or the beaches of California?

Regardless of where you would like to go, we can help plan your pre and post travel itineraries including flights and travel insurance. You have 90 days on your visa, it would be a shame not to use it all up!
